Things that concern us13

What we would ask about, check, or price into the deal.

Look closerApr 2026

Left engine compressions dropping

All six cylinders read 78/80 on 8-17-2023 (188.8 hr SMOH), 72-74/80 on 2-1-2025 (340.6 hr SMOH), and 68-70/80 on 4-15-2026 (457.4 hr SMOH). The entries record no follow-up. Ask for a borescope and a repeat compression test.

Right engine compressions 70/80 on three cylinders at 9.2 hours

4-15-2026 annual: #1, #2, #3 at 70 and #4, #5, #6 at 76 (out of 80) at 9.2 hr since the Nov 2025 overhaul. No follow-up is recorded.

Look closerApr 2026

Weight and balance on file is unsigned and shows no gross or useful load

The 11-5-2020 weight and balance (empty weight 3410.41 lb) has no signature, certificate number or return-to-service statement, and shows no gross weight or useful load. Revised weight and balance documents were prepared 1-30-2025, 2-7-2025 and 4-15-2026 and are not in the file. Earlier entries show empty weight 3293 lb with useful load 2007 lb (1967-68). Look closerDec 2025

AD records that conflict: AD 95-03-14 and mislabeled ADs

AD 95-03-14 is recorded N/A because the mount fittings were previously replaced (5-23-1996), complied with as an engine mount inspection (7-6-2000), N/A by engine serial number for the left engine (11-29-2021), and terminating action by improved brackets on the replacement right engine (11-24-2025). Entries of 6-1-1998 and 7-6-2000 attach AD 96-07-12/26-07-12 to engine mounts and AD 91-15-20 to the ignition switch, the reverse of every other entry.

Look closerDec 2025

AD markings without a stated basis

8-17-2023 annual: AD 2023-09-09, AD 2023-10-02 and AD 2022-03-15 are each 'DNA by part not installed' with no part number named. 11-5-2020: AD 71-24-10R1 is 'N/A by control yoke part number' after the dual control arm and copilot yoke were replaced, with no part number. 12-1-2025 right engine AD report: AD 2009-19-07 and AD 2014-05-29 are marked recurring ('Rec Yes') with Next Due N/A.

Right propeller: no overhaul entry, conflicting times

Prop EB3410A is recorded as RPTSMOH 2250.7 (6-21-2022) and 2431.1 (8-17-2023), then TTSN 340.6 (2-1-2025). The 8-25-2004 SPOH 1708.1 is struck through. The 2007 and 2009 TSPOH values were struck and rewritten (1086.1 to 1349.1; 1993.0 to 1424.0; 2044.4 to 1472.1). The 3-26-93 'remanufactured' entry is obscured. No propeller overhaul entry for this propeller appears in the entries. Ask what 340.6 represents and for the overhaul records.

Left engine entries carry the right engine's serial number

Hillsboro entries of 20 Jan 2023, 21 Apr 2023, 29 Dec 2023 and 9 May 2024 list the left engine as S/N 271786-R (struck through on three of them); the left engine is 684240 (the 271786-R engine was the right engine). The 4-1-2020 left engine annual also reads 271786-R. Verify engine identity against the data plates.

Left engine in-flight failure Jan 2023, cause not in the logs

ABS Magazine June 2023 (owner's account): left engine two quarts low, then #6 connecting rod found on top of #2 and #4 cylinders. The owner says Western Skyways attributed it to #6 main bearing oil starvation from an internal leak, because a camshaft was shipped without its oil plug. S/N 684240 had been overhauled by Western Skyways 29 Nov 2021 and was 167.5 hr SOH when removed 1-27-2023. The log entries say only 'removed for repairs'. Western Skyways W059904 (3-28-2023) lists a replacement crankshaft N08GA087, a crankcase, camshaft, lifters, and new cylinders #5 and #6 with 8130-3s. The engine was reinstalled 4-6-2023 under the same S/N 684240, while the article describes a replacement engine built under warranty. Ask for the Western Skyways teardown report and warranty paperwork.

Left propeller: overhaul date, serial number and total time unclear

The Johnson Propeller overhaul (W.O. 021-502) sits on a row dated Jan 3 2022 whose text reads 2024; the airframe log shows it installed 5-12-2022. On 6 April 2023 Western Skyways removed the propeller 'for repairs' and installed an 'overhauled' propeller serial EB8411A, total time Unknown, TSO 0 (TSO 3.7 on 17 April 2023). Other entries list the left propeller as EB3411A. The owner's article mentions a nick repaired and a blade replaced (blade identity not stated). Ask which propeller is installed and for the overhaul paperwork.
